Ausdrucksstarke, fein beschnitzte Holzfigur mit Darstellung des Evangelisten in einem weiten Gewand mit reichem Faltenwurf, auf eine Schrifttafel gestützt und zu seinen Füßen sein Symbol, den Stier. Leichte Altersspuren, stellenweise kleine Risse, ein Horn und ein Bein des Stiers fehlen. Höhe 33 cm.
Thomas Schwanthaler (1634 - 1707 in Ried im Innkreis, Österreich), Barockbildhauer, wohl bekanntestes Mitglied der Bildhauerfamilie Schwabenthaler.

A very expressive, finely carved wooden figurine of the evangelist in a delicately draped coat, leaning on a tablet with inscriptions, an ox resting at his feet. Minor traces of age, very few hairline cracks, a leg and a horn of the ox missing. Height 33 cm.
Thomas Schwanthaler (1634 - 1707), probably the best known member of the famous Austrian family of sculptors.
