[Caulfield, James]. Blackguardiana: Or, A Dictionary of Rogues, Bawds, Pimps, Whores, Pickpockets, Shoplifters, Mail-robbers, Coiners, House-breakers, Murderers, Pirates, Gipsies, Mountebanks, &c., London: Printed for John Shepherd et al. [1793-95]. Octavo, 19th-century half crushed morocco lettered in gilt with marbled boards, bearing two armorial bookplates, one of which is for Alexander Meyrick Broadley of The Knapp, Bradpole [notable British barrister and book collector, also known as Broadley Pasha]. Extra illustrated with 26 plates (the title page calling for only 18), being engraved portraits of 'the most remarkable Professors in every Species of Villainy'. Comprising title; 7pp. Preface; Additions & Corrections; the complete text  in 246 pp., including the Flash Songs & Cant Songs at rear. Some of the pages are out of sequence, probably caused by the confusion of interspersing anecdotes & biographies (printed on a heavier paper) within the main dictionary itself - but they are all present. The dictionary explains the criminal slang terms in use at the time, as well as contemporary insults, such as 'Bacon Fed: fat, greasy'; 'Beast with two Backs: a man and woman in the act of copulation'; 'Beetle browed: one having thick projecting eyebrows'; 'Guts and Garbage: a very fat man or woman, more guts than brains, a silly fellow'; 'Member Mug: a chamber pot'; 'Potato Trap: the mouth, shut your potato trap, and give your tongue a holiday, i.e. be silent'; 'Sherrif's Hotel: a prison'; 'Turnip Pated: white or fair haired'; 'Unlicked Cub: a rude uncouth young fellow'; 'Wipe: a blow, or reproach, I'll give you a wipe on the chops'. Contents with general toning, some pale spotting and faint staining in places; boards rubbed and morocco worn, but binding tight and square. Very scarce. The title page states 'N.B. Only a few Copies of this Work are printed.'
