Early Dimes 1803 10C JR-2, Low R.6 -- Double Struck, Damaged --

Early Dimes
1803 10C JR-2, Low R.6 -- Double Struck, Damaged -- NGC Details. AU. Ex: John McCloskey Collection. The JR-2 variety is rare in an absolute sense, with only 20 to 30 examples of the die marriage thought to survive. Many of those -- like this one -- are damaged or otherwise impaired. Here, a long diagonal gouge angles down across the reverse. The coin is double struck, seen clearly on both the obverse and reverse. Rich, iridescent toning blankets each side. This is a rare early dime variety and a spectacular Mint error, with About Uncirculated sharpness despite multiple Mint anomalies. Struck from the seldom-seen late die state, with rust pits at 3 in the date and bold reverse die cracks.
Ex: John McCloskey Collection / FUN Signature (Heritage, 1/2022), lot 4312.
