A GILT AND PATINATED 'GRAND TOUR' MODEL OF A SEATED GLADIATOR FRENCH OR ITALIAN, CIRCA 1840 Well detailed and modelled, on a Siena marble base 43.5cm high overall, base 29cm by 25cm SALEROOM NOTICE: The seated figure is Leonidas, King of Sparta and hero of the battle of Thermopylae, 480 BC. The figure is derived from Jacques-Louis David's painting in the Louvre, painted in 1814 (inv. no. 3690). The figure is known in gilt bronze clocks made in Paris in the early 19th century.
