Italian School, mid-18th century

Italian School, mid-18th century A rocky river landscape with a figure on the bank in the foreground oil on canvas 74 x 128cm, in a maple frame Provenance: The Estate of Virginia Chapman, late of Debden Manor, Debden, Essex. Condition report: Oil on canvas. The canvas does not appear to be lined but the reverse has been coated in either paint or adhesive. This adhesive has possibly been pushed through the front of the paint layer, forming small rows of raised spots along the age cracks. The canvas tension is stiff. There is an old damage at the lower right corner. There are a few localised areas of raised and lifted paint flakes. Overpaint in the dark paint passages are obvious as dark, opaque areas. In the sky the overpaint has a brushy and abraded appearance. The varnish has become brittle with age causing a hazy cast across the original paint layers. There is a layer of surface dust present. The frame is in a good condition.
