WITCH POST - 1677 DATED WITCHES POST W/CROSS OF ST ANDREW

Occult / Witch Interest - a ' Witch Post ' with carved notation ' EG - 1677 ' topped by St Andrews cross. Likely oak or rowan wood. By repute salvaged from a recently demolished house in Yorkshire (no provenance to support this). Measures approx: 51cm tall. Sold 'as is'.Witches posts were engraved hearths that were believed to protect a house from witches entering the chimney. Fewer than twenty witches posts exist worldwide and all (bar one) were found in houses in the Yorkshire moors. Three similar examples can be found in Ryedale Folk Museum.
