Valentinian II, with Theodosius I and Arcadius, 375-392. Weight of 1 Ounkia (Orichalcum, 25x25 mm, 26.57 g), a square commercial weight with plain edges, 383-392. Valentinian II, Theodosius I and Arcadius seated facing, each holding scepter in his right hand and globe in his left; below, Γᴑ A between two Ionic capitals; all details engraved, the faces, left hands, legs, feet and denomination mark inlaid in silver. Rev. Blank. Bendall -, cf. 62 (3 ounkia). CPAI -. MAH -. Pondera -, cf. 6622 and 4626 (2 and 3 ounkia). Extremely rare and of great historical interest. A beautifully engraved piece with three impressive imperial figures. Adjustment marks as made and with some scratches, otherwise, good very fine.
The three emperors engraved onto the obverse of this impressive weight are Valentinian II, Theodosius I and Gratian, whose joint rule dates to 379-382, or more likely Valentinian II, Theodosius I and Arcadius, which would date the piece to 383-392.
