Large Cents
1800 S-205 R4 MS62 Brown PCGS, CAC Approved. Lustrous steel and chocolate brown. Satiny mint frost covers both sides and this cent has outstanding eye appeal. The only marks are a pair of small pinpricks on the upright of the B in LIBERTY, a shallow planchet flake in the dentils under the right side of the 8 (as struck), and two small spots of very shallow carbon in the field off the chin. MDS, Breen state II, showing die clashmarks on both sides and a fine die crack through ICA and the ribbon but not reaching the denominator. Graded AU55 and CC#2 in the Noyes census, his photo #38546. Bland says MS60 and tied for CC#3. This cataloger's EAC grade is MS60. A great cent that comes with a long provenance that includes many prominent collectors. The attribution and Naftzger-Reynolds provenance are noted on the PCGS Gold Shield label. PCGS population 1; 1 finer in 63. 36203.62/32980109.

Following his early work in the wholesale fruit business, Harlan Page Smith turned his attention to numismatics in 1876. He was born at Hamilton, New York on March 18, 1839 and died at New York City on March 2, 1902. Although his earliest numismatic affiliation was Smith & Sampson with Henry G. Sampson, he conducted more than 20 auction sales under his own name in the 1880s. However, Smith is best known for his partnership with David Proskey in New York Coin and Stamp Company. Smith financed the business while Proskey handled the cataloging. The Chapman brothers sold Smith's collection, including an 1822 half eagle, in May 1906.
