Dorothy Eugenie Brett (1883-1976) English, MM/B

Titled "Dance of Heavenly Angels" 1951. This piece is a mixed media on board. Verso indicates that piece comes from the collection of Fania Marinoff. Marinoff was associated with one of the most vibrant artistic circles in the United States and Europe. She numbered among her friends writers such as Gertrude Stein, playwrights such as Eugene O’Neill, and artists such as Georgia O’Keeffe. Fania Marinoff and her husband, Carl Van Vechten, played a prominent role in the bohemian social and artistic life of New York, particularly of the Harlem Renaissance.Born in England to an aristocratic family, Dorothy Brett led a sheltered early life. In 1910, she began study at the Slade School of Art in London where she became associated with the Bloomsbury group, a coterie of English writers, philosophers, and artists. Among the people she met in London was novelist D. H. Lawrence, who had traveled to Taos in 1923. Indulging in a dream of beginning a utopian community in New Mexico, he returned to England to attempt to persuade friends and colleagues to join him. Dorothy Brett alone accepted his offer. Her decision would encourage her lifelong fascination with Native American cultures. Over time, her work took on a more mystical quality, the later pieces are characterized by a stylization that suggests the rhythms of Native American dances and chants.Overall size: 29 1/2 x 19 1/2 in.Size: 26 x 16 in.
