President George Washington said to Henry William DeSaussure: "I have long desired to see gold coined at the Mint, but your predecessor found insuperable difficulties. I should be gratified if it could be accomplished." Although DeSaussure served as Mint Director only a short time from July to October 1795, he indeed brought the coinage of gold to the Philadelphia Mint. He was born in Pocotaligo, South Carolina, on August 16, 1763, and died in Charleston, South Carolina, on March 29, 1839. DeSaussure was a volunteer during the siege of Charleston, spending two months aboard a prisoner ship, followed by a prisoner exchange in Philadelphia. He remained in the North to study law, and was admitted to the Pennsylvania bar in 1784. Upon returning to South Carolina, he was admitted to the bar of that state in 1785, the same year that he married Eliza Ford, the mother of his 11 children.
