Nicholas Matthew Condy (British, 1818-1851) HMS Canopus off the coast oil on panel 32 x 41.9cm (12 5/8 x 16 1/2in). Footnotes: Provenance With Frost & Reed, no. 53441. HMS Canopus was an 80 gun third-rate ship of the line. Built in 1798, she was originally in the French Service known as the Franklin . That same year she was captured by the British Navy under Rear Admiral Horatio Nelson at the Battle of the Nile. Renamed as Canopus , she went on to serve 89 years in the British fleet.
