A Set of Six Victorian Silver Dinner-Plates by Paul Storr, London, 1838, Retailed by Storr and Morti

each shaped circular and with water lily, leaf and reeded border, engraved with a crest above and initial 'B' 116oz 3dwt, 3,613gr Provenance: From a Private Collection of Silver (lots 2140-2230). Footnote: A number of plates of this unusual pattern, and with the same engraving, have appeared at auction including at Bonhams, Christie's and Sotheby's. Interestingly it would seem that the set had previously been very widely disbursed with examples generally appearing in pairs or as singles. The crest is possibly ' out of a ducal coronet or, a dragon's head with the wings elevated vert ' as used by the Butterfield family of Hampshire, though the engraving on the present plates does not indicate the tincture so it is impossible to be certain. Condition report: Each marked underneath and further stamped '371'. Five further stamped 'Storr & Mortimer'. The marks are generally clear. There is some overall surface scratching and wear as well as some minor dings, consistent with age and use. There are some small areas of pitting in places. Adhesive tape has been placed over the marks. This has yellowed due to age.
