Despite Kokoschka´s witty quip, “life is not a still life”, the viewer must marvel at the enigma of his owl: is it a living animal, glancing at the viewer, or is it a carcass, flat on a table top, in the manner of memento mori? It is a great testament to Kokoschka´s talent that his drawing displays not only his technical skill, but gives room to a multitude of interpretations too.
This drawing will be will be included in the catalogue of drawings and watercolors that is being prepared by the Graphic Art Collection of the Albertina by Alfred Weidinger and Alice Strobl.
Provenience: private collection of Johann Winkler, author of the catalogue of Kokoschka´s paintings. He received the drawing as a gift from the artist himself.

Trotz Kokoschkas ironischem Spruch "Das Leben ist kein Stillleben" kann der Betrachter über das Rätsel seiner Eule staunen: Handelt es sich um ein lebendes Tier, das den Betrachter anschaut, oder ist es ein Kadaver, der nach Art des memento mori flach auf einer Tischplatte liegt? Es zeugt von Kokoschkas Talent, dass seine Zeichnung nicht nur sein technisches Können zeigt, sondern auch Raum für eine Vielzahl von Interpretationen lässt.
Die Zeichnung wird in den Oeuvre-Katalog der Zeichnung und Aquarelle, der von der Graphischen Sammlung Albertina (Alfred Weidinger und Alice Strobl) vorbereitet wird, aufgenommen.
