A Victorian Scottish silver Life-Saving medal inscribed “Presented By The Lord Provost & Magistrates of Edinburgh To Robert M. Ballantyne In Recognition of His Meritorious Services In Saving Life at the Disastrous Fire In The Canongate, October 9th 1867”, the reverse engraved with the Arms of the City of Edinburgh, makers mark: A.M. & Co.; together with a silver-plated tennis trophy beaker won by J.G. Ballantyne in 1900. THE CANONGATE FIRE: On the 9th October 1867, a fire broke out at the premises of fireworks maker Thomas Hammond in Chessels Court, Cannongate, resulting in five fatalities.
