MEXICO. "Hookneck" 8 Reales, 1824-Mo JM. Mexico City Mint. NGC AU

MEXICO. "Hookneck" 8 Reales, 1824-Mo JM. Mexico City Mint. NGC AU Details--Cleaned.
HOH-MO17/MR17 (early die state) ; KM-A376.2; DP-Mo02. Variety with small "o" of mintmark bracketed by rays. Superscript "s" of Granos touches ray. Head of snake points just below the "R" with gaps between segments of snake's body. This nicely preserved and well struck example displays a light gray tone with plenty remaining luster in the protected areas. The cap is full with complete "Libertad", full legends and much fine detail on the eagle. Close inspection reveals evidence of a past cleaning, now slightly subdued. Despite its shortcomings a presentable example of the type. As far as we can determine this early die state is previously unpublished. The example plated in Hubbard and O'Harrow exhibits evidence of die clashing. The present example does not carry this characteristic which indicates an earlier die state.
