AN EARLY 20TH CENTURY BUTTERFLY WING, DIAMOND AND RUBY BUTTERFLY BROOCH, BY ERNST PALTSCHO (1858-1929) the thorax and abdomen set with old-cut diamonds, with ruby cabochon eyes and diamond set antennae, to wings inset with blue butterfly wings behind rock crystal, total estimated diamond weight 0.50 carat approximately, stamped with marker’s mark for Ernst Paltscho, stamped with Austrian 14 carat gold assay mark. Measures 5cm by 7cm, 24.2 grams, in fitted case signed Ernst Paltscho, Graben 13 WeinErnst Paltscho (1858-1929) founded the firm Paltscho, in 1899 in Vienna and was favoured by the Austro-Hungarian aristocracy and members of the Greek Royal household. The firm was renowned for its finely crafted jewels inspired by the natural world and patented jewellery using natural butterfly wings.The absence of a Condition Report does not imply that a lot is without imperfections. Please note carefully the exclusion of liability for the condition of lots contained in the Conditions of Sale.There is a small area of wear/repair to the tip of the top left wing, the butterfly wings in good condition and bright with no notable discolouration. The estimated qualities of the diamonds are; colour: G/H, clarity: VS2/SI1. It fastens with a pin and safety catch, which is removable by a screw fitting. It is stamped with Austrian 14 carat gold assay mark and in our opinion would test as gold. It is marked ‘GES.GESCH.’, ‘PATENT’ and ‘Gebrauchsmusterschtz’ to indicate patent. The box is in poor condition with the lid and lid lining detached.
