A Pontifical Civil Guard Generals sword


dating: Mid 19th Century provenance: Papal States, Straight, tipped, single-and short false-edged blade, with double fuller, engraved with trophies and two mottos at the forte: 'VIVA ITALIA' and 'VIVA PIO IX'. Few pitting. Gilt-brass hilt slightly rotating) with wide sword-shell decorated with flowers in relief, the main quillon decorated in relief and featuring three other quillons ending in a curl. The guard with typical forked end and pommel shaped as a lion's head. Brown horn hilt (small missing parts) with copper wire binding. Iron scabbard (pitting) with brass mounts, two lugs. length 98 cm.
