Five Shillings (Crown) Bank of England, Peppiatt B253, very scarce fractional war note never issued, these notes were prepared during WW2 as emergency issues because of a feared shortage of silver coins due to problems with the power supply at the royal mint, 8 million notes were printed and distributed to the clearing banks in 1941, the paper has no watermark but does have a security thread, the crisis at the Royal Mint passed and the notes were then not authorised for issue and were all supposedly destroyed, this note is one of a very few that survived and is therefore extremely scarce and an essential issue for any serious collector of British banknotes, some surface dirt, about VF
